Institute of Professional Investigators
The Institute of Professional Investigators was founded in 1976 and is the foremost organisation of its kind — serving the needs and representing the professional interests of its members. The emphasis in membership is on the quality and calibre of the Institute's individual members, rather than the quantity.
Membership of the Institute is by examination and thorough vetting. It also requires the individual's achievement of either a recognised vocational qualification relevant to investigatory practice at senior management level, or a professional or business qualification of appropriate standing plus a minimum of 3 years investigatory experience. Membership of the Institute is open to investigators in private practice, civil and military police officers, arson, fraud, forensic, local government and in-house corporate investigators operating nationally or internationally.
Association of British Investigators
The Association of British Investigators (ABI) is the longest established organisation representing professional Private Investigators in the UK with its foundations laid way back in 1913. With the absence of any statutory control of the investigation industry in the UK the ABI recognised the need for self-regulation many years ago and set very high standards to meet the criteria for membership opting for quality rather than quantity.
World Investigators Network

The World Investigators Network was formed to promote and maintain the highest ethical practices in the profession of private investigation or security service contractor. It aims to foster and perpetuate a spirit of cooperation among its members and with all those engaged in law enforcement throughout the world. Members are selected whose personal and professional background and business affiliations have strictly observed the precepts of truth, accuracy, ethics and prudence.
International Kommission Der Detektiv Verbande
Founded in 1964, the IKD, "Internationale Kommission der Detektiv-Verbande" (International Federation of Associations of Private Detectives) is an International umbrella body consisting of associations of private investigators and security practitioners throughout the world. The Federation has its seat in Vienna, Austria and invites membership from national professional organizations or representatives.
Scottish Investigators Forum
The SIF was formed in May 2000, embracing a core membership from the Scottish branches of the Institute of Professional Investigators (IPI) and the Association of British Investigators (ABI) as well as Investigtors who were members of neither organisation. The SIF quickly established itself by forming a policy on the licensing and regulation of Investigators as proposed by the UK Government, but a devolved power to the Scottish Parliament. This policy was formed into a petition which was placed before the Scottish Parliament early 2001. The SIF continues to grow, having committees examining areas of Legal Aid, Registration and Licensing, Data Protection and other legislation.
